The Third Eye Chakra governs intuition, insight, and inner
wisdom. It is associated with psychic abilities, perception
beyond the physical realm, and the integration of inner and
outer realities.
Ajna chakra (often referred to as the Third Eye or Brow chakra) is the sixth energy center in the subtle body, located in the middle of the forehead, slightly above the
space between the eyebrows. Ajna is traditionally associated with intuition, wisdom, insight, mental clarity, and spiritual perception. Awakening the Ajna chakra allows
one to access higher states of consciousness, cultivate deep inner vision, and connect with the intuitive, psychic, and spiritual aspects of the mind.
Swami Satyananda outlines specific practices and techniques in Kundalini Tantra to awaken and activate the Ajna chakra, many of which involve meditation,
breathwork, visualization, and mantra. Awakening this chakra not only enhances spiritual insight and mental clarity but also facilitates a deeper connection with the
inner self and the divine consciousness.
- Asanas
Certain asanas (yogic postures) can help stimulate and balance the energy in the Ajna chakra. These asanas activate the head, neck, and spine, areas that are
energetically connected to Ajna, and they also aid in calming the mind, which is essential for deeper concentration and meditation. Recommended Asanas:
Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward-Facing Dog): This posture helps lengthen and release tension in the spine, neck, and shoulders, which can create the physical
space necessary for energy to flow freely through Ajna.
Paschimottanasana (Seated Forward Bend): This seated forward fold helps to quiet the mind, soothe the nervous system, and stimulate the third eye by calming the
body and centering attention.
Sirsasana (Headstand): This inversion pose is often recommended for awakening higher states of consciousness. It stimulates the pineal gland (which is linked to
Ajna) and increases blood flow to the brain, enhancing mental clarity.
Viparita Karani (Legs-Up-The-Wall Pose): This restorative asana has a calming effect on the nervous system, helping to balance the energy in the head and upper
chakras, including Ajna.
Supta Baddha Konasana (Reclining Bound Angle Pose): This posture opens the hips and calms the body, supporting mental clarity and peacefulness, which are
conducive to meditation and Ajna activation. - Pranayama
Pranayama, or yogic breathing, is essential for the awakening of Ajna chakra, as it helps to control the flow of prana (life energy) and clear any mental blockages. The
breath also connects the body and mind, making it easier to access the intuitive aspects of consciousness. Recommended Pranayama Techniques:
Anulom Vilom (Nadi Shodhana or Alternate Nostril Breathing): This pranayama is one of the most important for balancing and activating the Ajna chakra. It cleanses
the nadis (energy channels) and harmonizes the left and right hemispheres of the brain, promoting mental clarity and intuitive thinking.
Technique: Sit in a comfortable position with the spine straight. Using the right hand, close the right nostril and inhale deeply through the left nostril. Close the
left nostril and exhale through the right nostril. Then inhale through the right nostril, close the right nostril, and exhale through the left nostril. Continue
alternating the nostrils with a slow and deep breath. This practice balances the energies of the body and helps calm the mind.
Kapalbhati (Breath of Fire): This technique is energizing and helps to clear the mind of mental fog, improving concentration and mental clarity—qualities that
directly benefit the awakening of Ajna.
Technique: Sit in a comfortable posture, inhale deeply, and exhale forcefully through the nose by engaging the abdominal muscles. Perform rapid exhalations
followed by passive inhalations. It clears the sinuses, enhances oxygen flow to the brain, and activates the third eye region.
Ujjayi (Victorious Breath): Ujjayi is a breathing technique in which the breath is slightly constricted in the throat, creating a soft, ocean-like sound. This practice
helps to focus the mind and bring awareness to the Ajna chakra.
Technique: Sit with your spine erect, close your eyes, and breathe deeply through the nose. As you inhale, gently constrict the back of the throat, creating a
slight hissing sound. Continue breathing in this way, maintaining focus on the area of the third eye. - Meditation Techniques
Meditation is one of the most powerful tools for awakening the Ajna chakra. Through focused attention and concentration, one can deepen the connection with the
third eye, enhancing intuitive wisdom, mental clarity, and the ability to perceive higher states of consciousness.
Third Eye Meditation:
Technique: Sit in a comfortable position with the spine straight and the eyes closed. Direct your awareness to the space between the eyebrows, where the Ajna
chakra resides. Visualize a small light or flame in this area, and as you breathe, imagine this light growing brighter and expanding. Focus on the sensation of energy or
vibration in this space, and let your mind become still, allowing intuition and insight to emerge.
Alternatively, you can also focus on the image of an eye or the moon in the forehead area to activate the Ajna chakra.
Trataka (Concentration on a Flame):
Technique: Place a candle at eye level in front of you in a dark room. Focus your gaze on the flame without blinking, allowing the mind to concentrate on the object
of focus. This practice helps activate the third eye and improves concentration. After a few minutes, close your eyes and visualize the flame in the area of the Ajna
chakra. The practice of Trataka sharpens the mental faculties and helps in activating the intuition.
Visualization of Light or Energy:
Technique: Sit in a quiet space and bring your attention to the area of the Ajna chakra. Visualize a ball or orb of indigo or violet light at the center of your forehead.
See this light spinning or radiating outward. With each breath, feel the energy growing stronger and more vibrant. This meditation helps activate the energy in the
third eye, increasing inner clarity and insight. - Mantra Chanting and Affirmations
Chanting specific mantras and affirmations activates the Ajna chakra by stimulating the vibrational resonance in the forehead area. The power of sound is used to focus
the mind and open the intuitive faculties.
Bija Mantra for Ajna: “Om”
Technique: Sit in a comfortable, meditative posture. Focus your awareness on the third eye area and chant the mantra “Om” slowly and deeply. The sound of Om
resonates with the vibration of the Ajna chakra, purifying the mind and helping to access higher wisdom. Chanting Om repeatedly brings your consciousness to a
higher, intuitive state.
Chanting “Aum” or “Om Namah Shivaya” can also be used to deepen the connection to the third eye.
Technique: You can chant these mantras aloud or silently. If you choose to chant aloud, allow the sound to reverberate within you and create a resonant vibration at
the third eye point.
Affirmations for Ajna:
“I trust my inner vision.”
“My intuition is clear and accurate.”
“I am connected to my higher self.”
“I am open to spiritual insight and wisdom.”
These affirmations help reprogram the mind to activate the intuitive aspects of the Ajna chakra, fostering greater clarity and perception. - Diet and Lifestyle for Ajna
Maintaining a healthy body and mind is essential for the proper functioning of the Ajna chakra. A balanced diet that supports clarity of thought and enhances the
nervous system is important.Eat fresh, wholesome, and easily digestible foods. Foods rich in antioxidants, such as berries, leafy greens, and nuts, support brain health.
Avoid excess alcohol, processed foods, and foods that create mental dullness. Drink plenty of water to keep the body and mind hydrated. The brain relies on proper
hydration for clear functioning. Adequate sleep is crucial for the Ajna chakra. Ensure that you are getting sufficient, restful sleep to allow the mind and body to recharge
and support intuitive clarity. - Kriya Yoga and Energy Practices
Advanced yogic practices, particularly Kriya Yoga, are also used to awaken the Ajna chakra. These practices involve deep concentration, controlled breathing, and
visualization to raise the energy to higher levels, facilitating deeper insight and spiritual awakening.
Kriya Yoga Practices like Pranayama (breath control), Mudras (gestures), and Bandhas (body locks) can help in awakening the Ajna chakra by increasing the flow of prana
to the head and stimulating higher brain functions.
Through consistent practice of these techniques, you can awaken and activate your Ajna chakra, enhancing your intuition, mental clarity, and connection to higher
wisdom.
